Meet A Future Leader In Birmingham: Salma Santiago
Patch and T-Mobile have partnered to highlight young people achieving great things in our community.

The future of Birmingham is looking bright, thanks to the incredible young people working to strengthen our community. In partnership with T-Mobile, Patch is proud to spotlight future leaders like Salma Santiago, who are making a positive impact in and around Birmingham.
Salma, a University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) student won the 2023 SAHPD Student Leadership in Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity Award, a prestigious honor that highlights her commitment to promoting inclusivity and equity in healthcare. At the time, Santiago was a senior in the Biomedical Sciences program, now continuing her education in the UAB Physician Assistant program. She balanced her academic excellence, earning a spot on the UAB Presidential Honors List with a 4.0 GPA, alongside leadership roles such as Vice President of the UAB Pre-PA Association and participation in the UAB Health Equity Leadership Academy.
A first-generation college student and transfer from Snead State Community College, she became a mentor and tutor with UAB’s TRIO Academic Services and played a vital role in welcoming new students as part of the UAB Trailblazers. Her dedication to service is reflected in her future goals, as she plans to return to her hometown of Marshall County to provide care to underserved Medicaid patients.
