Here are the top three stories today in Birmingham:

  1. Birmingham-metro area officers are being recruited by departments across the South East. Gwinnett County Police Department in Georgia just held a hiring event in Birmingham. Lt. Joni Money with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says the other places are likely competing with large cities, like Atlanta, and have to fan out their search. (WBRC)
  2. Modern House Coffee Shop in Titusville provides an opportunity for people experiencing homelessness to work. Owner Troy Whetstone said, “Many of these companies, the minimum is soft skills, being a people person, dealing with those type of things, knowing how to interact with people, so that’s what we kind of doing here. We’re incorporating that here through coffee.” Whetstone provides people skills training, $12 per hour pay, and a partnership with Lawson State Community College to help employees get professional certifications. (Birmingham Times)
  3. A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a train on Tuesday afternoon. Birmingham Fire Rescue Service responded to 5th Place SW around 5:00 p.m. where they pronounced the victim dead. There were no other injuries reported in the incident. (AL.com)
