- Six Birmingham students have won $9,000 in scholarships as part of a Juneteenth essay contest. The contest provided money for books and tuition to students ages eight to 18. Winners included elementary students at Meadowview and Helena and high school students at A.H. Parker and Ramsay. To see the full list of winners along with photos, click the link. - A Cordova homeowner was airlifted to the hospital after a gas fire broke out. According to Cordova Fire Chief Harbin, the fire broke out at 10:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Brick Plant Road, about 35 minutes outside of Birmingham. The homeowner was working with heavy equipment and two explosions occurred as a result of the fire. According to Spire Gas officials, the fire will affect about 500 residents in the area. - A man is dead after a shooting Sunday afternoon. According to police, the victim has been identified as Justin Jai Brown. The 22-year-old was shot in the 5900 block of Warner Street, near Lipscomb. This is Birmingham's 63rd homicide this year. According to police, the shooting may have involved an argument between Brown and another individual. (AL.com)
