Here are the top three stories today in Birmingham:

  1. Ahead of the school year, services are providing free school supplies to families in need. The squeeze of inflation is putting pressure on families, so Little Hands Serving Hearts is working to provide supplies to kids who need them. The organization gives away free backpacks filled with supplies and other items to be used by the families. To learn how to apply for and receive the supplies, click the link. (WBRC)
  2. A dog-borne virus has caused the Greater Birmingham Humane Society to suspend dog adoptions. The virus, H3N2 canine influenza, has infected several dogs in the shelter. According to the humane society, the incubation period for the virus is five to seven days. The society is asking anyone who adopted a dog and has noticed coughing, runny nose, or lethargy in their pet should contact the shelter director. Click the link for more details. (WVTM13 Birmingham)
  3. Is the housing market slowing down? According to the Greater Alabama MLS, home sales in Birmingham in June decreased 14 percent year-over-year. Sales decreased just under three percent from May. On the other hand, the median home sale price was $315,000, which represents a record high. A chief economist at the National Association of Realtors says that while higher-priced homes are staying on the market longer, homes that are priced correctly sell more quickly.
