BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Birmingham metro can expect some strong to severe storms to sweep through the area Monday, with strong winds, hail and a possible tornado included among the threats.
"A few thunderstorms could be severe with damaging winds up to 60 mph, quarter inch hail, and a brief tornado possible," the National Weather Service in Birmingham said in a statement Monday morning. "Stay aware of the weather and make sure you have multiple ways to receive warnings if they are issued."

Meteorologist James Spann said the main threat from stronger storms will come from gusty straight-line winds. "Some hail is possible as well," Spann said. "The overall tornado threat is low; a brief tornado can’t be totally ruled out but isn’t likely with marginal instability, low shear and weak dynamic support."
Rain totals through midnight should be less than 1 inch, and flooding is not expected, Spann said.
