Here are the top three stories in Birmingham today:

  1. Jefferson County recently announced that tag renewal notices will soon be full-page notifications. Previously, tag renewal notices were sent on postcards. Residents with more than one vehicle will have all vehicles listed on the full-page document. The county said that the move will save money over time even though postcards are less expensive to mail, due to the cost savings of not having to send multiple postcards to a single address. (ABC)
  2. The Birmingham Board of Education has approved $240,000 to expand the Birmingham Promise program. This program places high school seniors into internships, and the increased funding will quadruple the number of seniors that can participate and allow for new programs for sophomores and juniors to shadow professionals in the workplace. Next year, the program's goal is to have 100 seniors participating in internships during both the fall and spring semesters, as well as for 200 sophomores and 200 juniors to participate in the shadowing program. (Alabama Political Reporter)
  3. The Housing Authority of the Birmingham District (HABD) has received a regional award. The Southeastern Regional Council of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment chose Birmingham's Housing Authority as the recipient of the Advocacy Award. This award is presented to agencies that interact with Congress on advocacy efforts that have an impact on a local, state, or national level. HABD President and CEO Dontrelle Young-Foster commended the agency's work to improve infrastructure and public transit options for public housing communities. (WVTM)
