Here are the top three stories today in Birmingham:

  1. For fans of the theater, Birmingham is the place to be. The area has nine upcoming shows perfect for a night out with the whole family. The Red Mountain Theatre will introduce Opera Birmingham's TOUCH, an opera focusing on the life of Helen Keller. The Birmingham Children's Theater will host a story about Amelia Earhart. A full list of shows with information about the dates and times can be found here. (Bham Now)
  2. After the closure of a beloved Birmingham bakery, a fundraiser has been started for one of its former employees. Bogue's Restaurant closed seemingly without warning at the end of August. Since then, a fund has been created to benefit "Miss Ella" Irby, baker of the restaurant's iconic sweet rolls for the last 45 years, after she was suddenly left without a job. Those who would like to contribute to the fund can do so here. (AL.com)
  3. In an effort to combat youth violence, Birmingham City Schools are working to promote extracurricular activities for students. A string of violence over Labor Day weekend was attributed to local gangs, according to Mayor Randall Woodfin. Though Birmingham City Schools have not seen signs of gang violence in the schools, they're providing parents with training in case their child does become involved. (WBRC)
