West Birmingham Shooting Leaves 21-Year-Old Man Dead

A man was killed in a shooting Sunday night in the 1200 block of Avenue W in west Birmingham.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — A 21-year-old man is dead and another victim injured in a shooting Sunday night in west Birmingham. The shooting occurred just after 6 p.m. in the 1200 block of Avenue W.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald of the Birmingham Police Department said the victims arrived at Fire Station 18 on Dugan Avenue after the shooting, with both the driver and passenger suffering from gunshot wounds. The passenger, 21-year-old Aven Deione Mitchell, was pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver was taken to UAB Hospital and is expected to recover from bis injuries.

Fitzgerald said the preliminary investigation suggests that the two victims were driving on Avenue W when an unidentified vehicle pulled alongside them and began firing shots.

No suspects are in custody. Mitchell's death was the second homicide of the weekend in Birmingham, and the 25th homicide of 2022.
