Hoover City Schools Needs Bus Drivers

The Hoover school system is looking to hire full time and substitute bus drivers immediately.

HOOVER, AL — Hoover City Schools is in need of bus drivers, and looking to hire both full-time and substitute drivers for the school system.

"Bus drivers and aides have the unique opportunity to be the first and last face the students see," said Jeremy Bradford, the transportation director for Hoover City Schools. "They can set the tone for the day. Our success is totally dependent on the remarkable staff we have in the transportation department."

Hoover City Schools adheres to all local, state, and federal policies and procedures related to pupil transportation.

The district also has a transportation committee made up of district administrators as well as bus drivers who meet bi-monthly to discuss current issues. The committee also assists in updating the local transportation handbook, which is revised yearly.

  • The average pay for drivers is about $25 an hour.
  • Substitute drivers earn $45.00 per shift (up to $90.00/day for a.m./p.m. routes).
  • Drivers can also earn a $20.00 per hour flat rate for field trips ($30.00 per hour for weekends or holidays).
  • Morning routes are typically done around 8:30 a.m. and the afternoon routes are typically completed by 5:00 p.m.

"I really enjoy what I do." Terry Harris, an HCS bus driver of 13 years, said. "You have so much freedom of time between routes. I take my job very seriously, but it’s just a perfect job to give you something to do after you retire or if you’re working other jobs and can fit this in. It’s perfect."
