Here are the top three stories today in Hoover:
- Jordan Beam of Hoover has received the prestigious Phi Kappa Phi National Fellowship upon graduation from Auburn University. The funding from the fellowship will be applied toward her first year of medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine. Beam held leadership roles in a variety of clubs and committees, including Auburn Dance Marathon, Honors College Peer Academic Coaches, and Alpha Gamma Delta. (OCM Auburn)
- Hoover's Mackenzie Culpepper is starting the 2022 season with the rest of the Vanderbilt cross-country teams at the Belmont Opener. The women’s race will begin at 9:30 a.m, and the Commodores will compete against Alabama A&M, Austin Peay, Belmont, Dalton State, Lipscomb, Murray State, and Tennessee State. Last season, Vanderbilt hosted the Commodore Classic at Percy Warner Park. (VCU Commodores)
- A local advocacy group alleges a Jefferson County man's execution was botched. The anti-death penalty group has identified the length of time Joe Nathan James Jr. waited to receive his lethal injection as well as an autopsy indicating his arm was cut to find a vein. State officials have acknowledged the execution was delayed because it took them time to find a vein. (WTVM 13)
