Here are the top three stories in Hoover today:
- Hoover's own Robby Ashford has plenty in common with a young Malik Willis. Willis left Auburn to join forces with Hugh Freeze at Liberty and became one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft. Now that Freeze is Auburn's head coach, the hope is that Ashford can reach the same level. (Saturday Down South)
- Inmates at Jefferson County Jail were helped with voter registration over the weekend. The Campaign Legal Center's (CLC) Restore Your Vote team was joined by other local and state activist groups as they helped at least 60 inmates register to vote over three hours. The CLC said two out of every three people in U.S. jails are awaiting trial. Because they have not been convicted of a crime, there is no restriction on their right to vote. (ABC)
- BamaCarry is advocating for arming some of Alabama's teachers in the classroom. The gun rights group supports the idea of arming some teachers once they receive proper training to help better protect students. Alabama Superintendent of Education Dr. Eric Mackey stated that the state does not advocate for arming teachers in classrooms. The Hoover-based National Association of School Resources Officers executive director also challenged the idea of arming teachers. (WVTM13 Birmingham)
Today in Hoover:
- Friends Of Hoover Library: State Of The City Address At Hoover Public Library (9:45 AM)
From my notebook:
- Hoover High School Boys and Girls Indoor Track are state champions! Hoover High won big in Birmingham over the weekend. Congratulations! (Hoover High Athletics via Facebook)
- About 400 girls from Hoover County Schools participated in the Girls Engaging in Math and Science Expo this past Saturday. "Over the Moon" was the theme as girls listened to the inspiring talk of Dr. Jan Davis, a former American astronaut and veteran of three space flights. (Hoover City Schools via Facebook)
- “If I fits, I sits,” say the cats of the Humane Society of West Alabama. Brighten your day with pictures of some of the staff's favorite kitties chilling out. And no need to worry, some of these felines are still available for adoption! (Humane Society of West Alabama via Instagram)
You're all caught up for today! I'll see you around.
