  1. The Hoover-based coffee company Baba Java Roaster & Café, founded by locals Nathan and Wendi Parvin, is branching out with a new location in the Village at Meadow Brook strip center, marking its second spot in the town. The new establishment will not only serve the same specialty-grade coffees and teas as their Riverchase location but will also introduce a new offering — a combined Popbar shop serving gelato popsicles, a first for Alabama. This latest venture, along with a third outpost in the pipeline for downtown Birmingham in 2024, solidifies Baba Java's burgeoning status in Hoover and beyond, while further energizing the local café scene. 2. The Hoover Police Department has released photos (at the link) of suspects wanted for questioning in connection with a felony shoplifting case at a local business. The suspects are alleged to have collaborated in stealing merchandise valued at over $4,600, constituting a Class B felony carrying a potential sentence of up to five years in prison. If you recognize the suspects, contact Detective Chambless at 205-444-7632, Hoover Dispatch at 911 or (205) 822-5300, or submit an anonymous tip through the Hoover Police Department website or the Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama website. 3. In an effort to combat the long-standing shortage of physicians in Alabama, the state has implemented the Physician Workforce Act, a law designed to augment its number of practicing medical professionals. The law eases entry for out-of-state and international doctors, abolishing a specific testing requirement and expediting the licensure process for international graduates, while also inaugurating an apprenticeship initiative for those unable to secure residency placements. Despite skepticism suggesting this is not a cure-all for Alabama's healthcare challenges, many view it as a significant step forward and anticipate additional measures aimed at rural health, including potential scholarship incentives for medical service in areas of high demand.
