  1. Got somewhere to be? Be sure you know what streets will be closed for the World Games. The Jul. 7-17 event doesn't start until next week, but the street closings will begin tomorrow, Jul. 2. Street closures will be most prominent in downtown and uptown Birmingham, but venues around Hoover, including the Met, will cause closures as well. See the full list at the link. (AL.com)
  2. Croquet is OK! The Mountain Brook Croquet Club hosted a golf croquet championship earlier this month. Beginning Jun. 10, the three-day event featured seven club members competing with others from Georgia and Tennessee. The winner was Kent Lovvorn, who visited from the Carroll County Croquet Club located in Carrollton, Georgia. (Hoover Sun)
  3. A suspect in the shooting of two sheriff's deputies was found in a tent only half a mile from the location of the shooting. The 26-year-old was found behind a mobile home on Bulldog Bend Road early on Thursday. He has been arrested on 46 criminal charges since the age of 17 and is now in custody in the Shelby County Jail. The deputies were transported to UAB Hospital via a massive police escort along Interstate 65, traveling through Hoover, Homewood, and Birmingham. One of the deputies was released from the hospital, while the other suffered a very serious gunshot wound to the head and is in critical condition as of Thursday evening. (AL.com)

Are you a Hoover resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
