Here are the top three stories today in Hoover:

  1. The housing market is still hot, but do you know where it's the hottest? Stacker compiled a list of cities around Birmingham where the houses are flying off the figurative shelf. Hoover tied with Helena and Leeds to hit the number eight spot. On average, houses in those communities are closing in 36.2 days. In contrast, Mountain Brook is closing homes in a lightning-fast 25.1 days on average. See the full list at the link. (Selma Sun)
  2. They've handed out a lot of gold medals already, but who's the real winner of the World Games? Economists believe that it could be the whole Birmingham metro area. According to World Games Chairman Jonathan Porter, ticket sales have averaged over $170,000 per day since the Opening Ceremony. That combined with hotel booking fees, increased restaurant and tourism revenue around the area, and so many other little things may make a big difference. For instance, over $50,000 in merchandise was sold at the Hoover Met alone. (WBRC)
  3. The COVID-19 universal free meal program has ended, so Hoover schools approved new meal prices for the coming school year. Congress funded a universal free meal program for all students as part of COVID-19 relief, but funding ended as of Jun. 30. For the 2022-23 school year, prices will be slightly higher than they had been in the 2019-20 school year. The school system's child nutrition director said that the increased prices are due to rising food costs. (Hoover Sun)
