Here are the top three stories in Montgomery today:

  1. Montgomery police released the identity of the latest homicide victim, 33-year-old Ana Gilmore. Ana died after a Mar. 21 shooting near the Eastern Boulevard and the Extended Stay America hotel. Police are still investigating the incident and ask anyone with information to call CrimeStoppers at 215-STOP, the secret witness at 625-4000, or MPD at 625-2831. (WSFA.com)
  2. After nearly a century of serving the Montgomery community, City Drug has closed its doors permanently. The downtown pharmacy first opened in 1927 and has been a staple in the local community at 11 Dexter Avenue. (Montgomery Advertiser via Facebook)
  3. Sen. Kirk Hatcher (D-Montgomery) co-sponsored of Senate Bill 34, which would repeal the Human Life Protection Act. The Human Life Protection Act prohibits abortion in Alabama except when the patient’s life is "at risk," but the definition of “at risk” has still not been clearly defined. Sen. Vivian Davis Figures (D-Mobile) sponsored both Senate Bill 34 and Senate Bill 35, which would allow the termination of pregnancies that are the result of rape or incest, but she does not expect them to pass. Figures said she filed the bills to raise awareness and "in light of the fact that Roe vs. Wade was struck down by the United States Supreme Court on June 24, 2022, giving the states the right to enact laws in regards to a woman’s right to choose, I thought it was apropos to let this legislature know that women are still crying out loudly to have the right to choose what they want to do with their bodies."
