Arrest Made In 2021 Murder At Hay Court Apartments

TUSCALOOSA, AL — An arrest has been made in the 2021 shooting death of a man who was walking home in Hay Court.

Captain Jack Kennedy, commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, told local media Thursday morning that a Tuscaloosa County Grand Jury earlier this month returned an indictment for murder for Frederick Dewayne Lewis, 22.

As Patch previously reported on Oct. 19, 2021, Trevoris Sheppard, 28, was shot while walking to his home in Hay Court.

No arrest was made at the time of the fatal shooting and the case has remained active with the Violent Crimes Unit.

Kennedy said investigators continued to work on the case, reexamining the known evidence, as well as developing new leads both with technology and community involvement.

“All homicide cases are a priority for the Violent Crimes Unit, and all cases remain active and open until an arrest has been made," Kennedy said. "All investigators that worked on this case, from the initial response, the continual follow-up, and the eventual reexamination and presentation to grand jury are to be commended.

Lewis, who was 18 years old at the time of the shooting, was arrested on the indictment on Saturday and booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail.

He has since been released after his bond was set at $75,000.
