Big Sandy Elementary Hosts Piece Of World Trade Center

The school has also been named Alabama's State School of Remembrance for 2025-26 by the Freedom Flag Foundation.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Big Sandy Elementary School marked the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks Wednesday morning with a flag-raising ceremony and remembrance service.

The school has also been named Alabama’s State School of Remembrance for 2025-26 by the Freedom Flag Foundation — the only school in Alabama to hold the distinction this year.

As part of the prestigious honor, Big Sandy Elementary will host a piece of steel from Tower 1 of the World Trade Center for the entire school year.

The artifact was on display during Wednesday’s ceremony and will rotate through classrooms this month, allowing students to study it in connection with one of the school’s core values, courage.
