TUSCALOOSA, AL — The Maxwell Football Club on Friday announced that Alabama safety Caleb Downs has been named a finalist for the Shaun Alexander Award.

The award, named after former Crimson Tide standout Shaun Alexander, is presented annually to the most outstanding freshman in college football.

Former Alabama defensive standout Will Anderson Jr. is the program's only winner of the prestigious award.
Downs, a native of Hoschton, Georgia ,has been awarded SEC Freshman of the Week twice this season for his performances against Middle Tennessee and Mississippi State.

Downs is one of five finalists for this year's award:
- Rueben Bain - Miami (Fla.)
- Kevin Concepcion - NC State
- Noah Fifita - Arizona
- Dillon Thieneman - Purdue
