The campaign launched in August with United Way’s annual kickoff luncheon and was led by campaign chair Josh Hayes, an attorney with Prince Glover Hayes.
Organizers credited strong community support from individuals, businesses and volunteers for the historic result.

“This campaign reflects what’s possible when a community comes together with purpose,” Hayes said. “I’ve seen firsthand the commitment of our volunteers, campaign cabinet and donors, and I’m incredibly grateful for their dedication to helping our neighbors in need.”
Several major contributors helped drive the campaign’s success, with Hunt Refining Co. raising $1,004,039. This marked the first time a single donor has surpassed $1 million in a United Way of West Alabama campaign.
Hunt Refining Co. has been the organization’s largest donor for eight consecutive years.
The University of Alabama also exceeded its fundraising goal, raising more than $400,000.
Tuscaloosa City Schools students raised more than $66,000 through its annual Student Drive, marking a 58% increase from the previous year.
Arcadia Elementary School led all TCS schools, raising more than $12,000.
United Way of West Alabama says funds raised through the annual campaign support 30 local nonprofit partner agencies and allow United Way to address urgent needs beyond those organizations, including rapid-response efforts.
“These funds help us support health, education, financial stability, and disaster relief and recovery for families across West Alabama,” said Jackie Wuska Wear, president and CEO of United Way of West Alabama. “One in four people in our community is impacted by United Way-funded programs. That means people you know.”
While the campaign has surpassed its goal, donations are still being accepted.
