Northport Fire Chief Bart Marshall told Patch that the homeowner reported that they started a fire in the fireplace and heard "crackling" in the flue pipe.

He then said the fire's origin appears to have been in the vicinity of the fire vent pipe — instead of a chimney — that exited the roof.

"The homeowner exited and noticed heavy smoke coming from the roof and called [911]," he said.

Marshall went on to say that the roof of the home consists of metal over shingles, which resulted in it taking firefighters some time to extinguish hot spots as tin had to be removed.

"It was contained pretty quickly and we should be finished within the next hour," he said, just before 7 p.m.

By the time Tuscaloosa Patch arrived at the scene just after 6 p.m., the fire appeared to have been contained, with just a thin plume of smoke visibly trickling out from the roof at one end of the residence.

Charlie Shirley Road remains open to traffic but delays are possible as emergency crews enter and exit the narrow road.
