The opener served as a kind of coming-out party for freshman wideout Ryan Williams, who made his first big splash by way of an 84-yard touchdown reception from Jalen Milroe, who finished the night 7-for-9 for 200 yards and three touchdown passes.

Williams, a Saraland native who was the cornerstone of an impressive recruiting class in the wake of longtime coach Nick Saban's retirement, only had two catches in the game but led the Tide in receiving yards with 139 and scored on both grabs.

On the defensive side, the Crimson Tide shut out an offense led by former Auburn and LSU quarterback TJ Finley, who went 18-for-31 passing for a pedestrian 92 yards.

Deontae Lawson led the way for the Tide defense with nine total tackles, while Michigan transfer Keon Sabb became a household name in Tuscaloosa County during his Crimson Tide debut by snagging two interceptions in the first half.

The Tide will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 6, when the University of South Florida travels to Bryant-Denny Stadium for the second installment of its home-and-home series with Alabama.

Kickoff against USF is set for 6 p.m. and the game will broadcast on ESPN.
