Doug Simpson Named New Softball Coach At Holy Spirit

UA director of football security and longtime travel ball coach Doug Simpson has been named the new softball coach at Holy Spirit.

TUSCALOOSA, AL β€” University of Alabama's director of football security and longtime travel ball coach Doug Simpson has been named the new softball coach at Holy Spirt Catholic School.

Simpson, 50, is a 1992 graduate of Tuscaloosa County High School and has served in his role in the UA Athletic Department since 2010. He also worked as a softball umpire from 1994-2021.

Simpson has a wealth of experience as a youth softball coach and has won 18 overall tournament championships as a head coach and five Alabama state championships, in addition to one United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) national championship.

During his time as a coach, he has had a total of 10 athletes get college scholarships after going through the travel ball program.

In terms of his approach to coaching, Simpson says he will preach hitting and fielding fundamentals, along with fostering an environment where his players can be challenged and molded into the best version of themselves.

β€œI am extremely grateful and excited to be taking over the Holy Spirit Softball program," Simpson told Patch. "My goal is to bring a winning culture and have a program the community and school will be proud of. We want to be champions on the field and in the classroom and I am eager to start instilling that mindset in our players."

Simpson and his wife, Christy, have been married since 1996 and have one daughter, Lynsey Simpson Layton, who played softball at Hillcrest High and is now a teacher at Thompson Intermediate School in Alabaster.
