Shelton State to Host Second HammerBuild Event Sept. 20
Shelton State Community College will host a second session of its HammerBuild program Sept. 20

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Shelton State Community College will host a second session of its HammerBuild program Sept. 20 after strong participation at its earlier event this month, the school announced.

The event, held in partnership with If I Had A Hammer, Inc., will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Shelton State’s Martin Campus. The free program is open to all ages.

HammerBuild is an immersive learning experience in which students construct a small house in one day while applying math skills, teamwork, goal setting and workforce training.
Instructor Mark Brackin said the first event on Sept. 6 brought together students ranging in age from 20 to nearly 50.

“We not only built a house, we built friendships,” Brackin said. “We all learned something — even me.”
Participants also dismantle the house at the end of the session to prepare for future classes.
