As Patch previously reported, a re-opening event was held in April for the Northport Community Center after the City of Northport invested in much-needed renovations in the wake of a failed push to sell the property.

An open house for the Northport Community Center will be held on May 30 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m., which will include a presentation about the program at 10 a.m.

The meal service at the Northport Community Center is set to begin on June 10.

Thanks in part to its financial partners, hot and nutritious lunches are provided to Tuscaloosa County adults ages 60 and older at any one of the current four FOCUS 50+ nutrition sites, with the Northport Community Center becoming the fifth.

FOCUS 50+ says participants are allowed to make a contribution of $1.25 per meal.

"The collaborative partnership with FOCUS 50+ has been great over the past three and a half years," Northport City Council President Christy Bobo told Patch. "We have implemented computer classes for seniors, hearing screenings, health initiatives and informational events"

She then said Northport officials have worked behind the scenes to help determine a path to establish the senior meal nutrition program in the city, while looking to promote more consistent programming for our Northport seniors.

"We're happy to see the efforts coming to fruition this June," she said. "We hope everyone interested can attend the open house and informational presentation."
