General Election For West Alabama House Seat Set For Next Tuesday

The general election for the open District 16 seat in the Alabama House of Representatives is set for next Tuesday, Jan. 9.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Voters in parts of three west Alabama counties are set to take to the ballot box next Tuesday for the general election for the open District 16 seat in the Alabama House of Representatives.

District 16 covers parts of Fayette, Jefferson, and Tuscaloosa counties.

As Patch previously reported, Northport attorney Bryan Brinyark won the Republican nomination with 1,706 votes or 53%, compared to 1,519 votes cast for Fayette County Commissioner and Republican candidate Brad Cox in the October GOP Primary runoff.

Brinyark's strongest turnout in the runoff came in his native Tuscaloosa County, where he grabbed 926 votes, which outpaced the total number of ballots cast in the Republican Primary in September (845).

Brinyark will face off against Democratic nominee and Fayette County Commissioner John Underwood in the general election, after Underwood secured the Democratic nomination without having any competition on the primary ballot in September.

The winner of the general election will fill the seat vacated by former state Rep. Kyle South, a Republican from Fayette, who stepped down at the end of the last legislative session to become the new president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama.

Polls on Tuesday, Jan. 9 are set to open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.
