Hamlin Appointed To Alabama Sentencing Commission

TUSCALOOSA, AL — 24th Judicial Circuit District Attorney Andy Hamlin announced on Friday that he has been appointed to serve on the 17-member Alabama Sentencing Commission.

The commission is tasked with conducting comprehensive reviews and analyses of sentencing practices across Alabama, along with collecting and analyzing data on sentencing trends and outcomes, providing the basis for policy decisions to the state legislature.

He will now be one of three district attorneys serving on the commission.

Hamlin serves the judicial circuit that includes Fayette, Lamar and Pickens counties.

"I am honored to have the opportunity to serve on the Alabama Sentencing Commission," Hamlin said. "This role allows me to contribute to the ongoing efforts to improve our state's criminal justice system.”

Hamlin touted his 18 years of experience in criminal prosecution as making him qualified for the role.

The commission is presently addressing issues such as ensuring fair and consistent sentencing practices statewide, addressing prison overcrowding and resource allocation, evaluating the effectiveness of alternative sentencing programs and considering the impact of sentencing on recidivism rates.

“I look forward to working alongside my fellow commissioners to address the complex challenges we face in sentencing and corrections," Hamlin said. "Our goal is to enhance public safety while ensuring justice is served fairly and effectively for all Alabamians."
