“This is a significant, generational event,” State Rep. Bill Lamb (R-Tuscaloosa) said. “This will be something that will enhance the life of Tuscaloosa for years to come.”

During the ceremony, officials also recognized the McAbee family before dedicating the new North River bridge in honor of Ruth and Leroy McAbee.

As Patch previously reported, it will now be known as the Mr. and Mrs. Leroy McAbee Sr. Bridge.

“Ruth and Leroy McAbee have been transformative in the growth of Tuscaloosa,” Tuscaloosa District 3 Councilor Norman Crow said. “It is an honor to see their legacy showcased in such a meaningful way.”

Leroy McAbee Sr., founder of McAbee Construction, built one of the Southeast’s largest heavy industrial contracting companies and has long been active in local philanthropy alongside his family, supporting groups such as United Way and the DCH Foundation.

“Mr. McAbee has been an inspiration to me,” District 1 County Commissioner Stan Acker said. “His dedication to this community is one that will be recognized for decades to come.”
