Longtime Tuscaloosa County Detention Deputy Shot And Killed In Birmingham

Here's what we know after a longtime TCSO detention deputy was shot and killed Wednesday night in Birmingham.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Authorities have confirmed that an off-duty Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office detention deputy and the brother of a slain Tuscaloosa Police Department investigator was shot and killed Wednesday night in Birmingham.

Jefferson County Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates told Patch on Thursday that Juan Tierney Hall, 42, was pronounced dead at UAB Hospital in Birmingham just before midnight Wednesday.

Yates said Hall sustained a gunshot wound to the head during a reported argument and his death is being investigated as a homicide by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

A 33-year-old man was also shot during the altercation and transported to UAB Hospital for treatment.

First reported Thursday morning by AL.com's Carol Robinson, a Jefferson County Sheriff's spokesperson said the 33-year-old man heard a knock at his apartment door and went to answer.

The man told police he opened the door to find Hall standing at the door of an adjacent’ apartment before Hall began shooting.

Investigators were told that the injured victim then went and retrieved a gun and returned fire, ultimately striking Hall with a fatal shot to the head.

The injured man who shot Hall then reportedly called 911 and reported the shooting.

The shooting occurred at an apartment complex in the 2100 block of Emerald Point Drive at 9:52 p.m. No potential motives in the case have been released by investigators.

Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Josh Hastings confirmed to Patch that Hall was a longtime detention deputy at the Tuscaloosa County Jail, but declined to offer any other details at this point in the case.

Multiple sources have also confirmed to Patch that Hall was the younger brother of slain Tuscaloosa Police Department Investigator Dornell Cousette, who was shot and killed in 2019 while attempting to make an arrest.

According to Cousette's obituary, Hall was an honorary pallbearer at Coustte's funeral.
