TUSCALOOSA, AL — I've lived all across the southeast and while I love my hometown of Tuscaloosa more than anything, there is a town 84 miles west that will always be my second home. And many of the Crimson Tide faithful are sure to make the trek to Starkville, Mississippi, this weekend as Alabama takes on Mississippi State Saturday night.

Before I founded Tuscaloosa Patch in the summer of 2020, I worked for nearly four years as the executive editor of the Starkville Daily News — a daily print newspaper that has been in existence in some form or other for over 100 years. During that time, it was the people behind the vibrant places and businesses that made Starkville so special, at least to me ... and that's coming from an Ole Miss and Alabama graduate.

So, with that in mind, I thought I would put together my short-list of places you should visit (in no particular order) if you're making the trip to Oktibbeha County this weekend to cheer on The Tide.

1. Dave's Dark Horse Tavern

The single best bar in America ... or at least in Mississippi. Owner Dave Hood has gone to amazing lengths to preserve the spirit of this townie bar, which is complimented by great food and a rich local music scene that is regularly on display on its modest and intimate stage.

One of the more iconic restaurants in all of Mississippi, offerings range from brunch to lunch and dinner, as Chef Ty Thames adds his own take to traditional southern cuisine, in addition to working in some surprises here and there. The restaurant also has arguably the best wine list in the state.

Pro tip: Try the cornbread.

Address: 100 E Main St, Starkville, MS 39759

3. Strange Brew Coffeehouse
Strange Brew Coffeehouse

A Starkville favorite, Strange Brew occupies a former service station and is the place where many begin their day. The coffeehouse is known for its caffeinated treats, fresh-baked pastries, and sense of humor with its marquee messages.

Pro-tip: Try the homemade pop-tarts.

Address: 605 MS-12, Starkville, MS 39759

4. The Guest Room

The Guest Room

Starkville's best-kept secret, The Guest Room is a windowless, speakeasy-style bar perfect for that high-class dinner or happy hour experience. Its dimly-lit atmosphere pairs great with the best selection of spirits in the city ... not to mention its world-class menu.

Pro tip: Try the Old Fashioned

Address: 100 E Main St, Starkville, MS 39759

5. Scooter's Records

I managed to save the best for last. For those interested in music and culture, I highly recommend visiting my good friend Scott Thomas at Scooter's Records if you're in Starkville this weekend. Considering it is one of the only true record stores in the entire region, Scooter's always has a deep selection of new and used vinyl, along with audio equipment and locally-made products.

Pro tip: Buy a bag of People's Cup coffee when you visit. You won't be disappointed.

Address: 519 University Dr, Starkville, MS 39759
