Schoolyard Roots Holding ‘A Moveable Feast’ Sept. 23-28

Local nonprofit Schoolyard Roots will bring back its popular local food celebration, "A Moveable Feast," for a fifth year Sept. 23-28.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Local nonprofit Schoolyard Roots will bring back its popular local food celebration, “A Moveable Feast,” for a fifth year Sept. 23-28, with restaurant specials, a kickoff party and a weeklong silent auction to support garden education in Tuscaloosa schools.

More than a dozen restaurants and cafes will offer a “Schoolyard Roots Special,” with a dish or drink created with ingredients grown by local farmers.

A portion of sales will benefit Schoolyard Roots, which provides hands-on gardening education for more than 4,300 students at 12 Tuscaloosa city and county elementary schools.

The event begins with a free kickoff party Sept. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Sanctuary on 25th, featuring live music, a silent auction, a specialty cocktail with herbs from Schoolyard Roots gardens, and a new Plant Spin game.

An online silent auction also opens Sept. 23 at 9 a.m. and runs through Sept. 28 at 5 p.m., with items from area farmers, artists and artisans.

Local farms contributing ingredients include Snow’s Bend Farm, Leavelle Farms, Southern Food Lab, Fat Squirrel Peppers, Underground Forest, Wallace Homestead, Hale Farms and Schoolyard Roots Gardens.
