Eatmon, who also serves as the head men's basketball coach at Shelton State Community College, said the initiative removes a major financial barrier that often keeps young people from joining organized sports.

“Basketball teaches discipline, teamwork and perseverance — skills that extend far beyond the court,” Eatmon said. “This is an investment in the future of our young people and our community.”

Austin Bolton, director of university and community partnerships for Sports Illustrated Resorts, said the partnership reflects the organization’s commitment to building character and opportunity through athletics.

“At Sports Illustrated Resorts, we believe in the power of sports to build character, create opportunity and strengthen communities,” Bolton said. “This partnership with Tuscaloosa City leaders represents our commitment to ensuring every athlete has the chance to develop not just their athletic skills, but life skills that will serve them long after they leave the basketball court.”

Benjamin Barnes YMCA Executive Director Lakeda Smith also said the program aligns with the YMCA’s mission of community investment.

“By creating opportunities for youth, we are opening doors for young people to grow in spirit, mind and body,” Smith said. “Together, we are building opportunities that nurture potential, inspire participation and strengthen the future of our community.”
