TCSO Offers Tips Ahead Of Fraud Awareness Summit

The Area Agency on Aging of West Alabama is set to host a Fraud Awareness Summit later this month.

TUSCALOOSA, AL β€” In an effort to better educate members of the community against the threats posed by scammers, the Area Agency on Aging of West Alabama will host its annual Fraud Awareness Summit later this month.

The event will take place on April 23 from 9:30 a.m. until noon at the Church of the Highlands in Tuscaloosa, which is located at 721 Rice Mine Road Northeast.

Organizers point out that older Americans are those who often become prime targets for scammers, which underscores the need for education.

Guest speakers will include the Alabama Securities Commission and Josh Hayes of Prince, Glover, and Hayes.

The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office says it will never ask for payment of fines over the phone and provided other quick tips ahead of the Fraud Awareness Summit.

TCSO points out that it's likely a scam that should be reported if the caller:

  • Uses intimidation, threats or scare tactics regarding payment.
  • Pressures the victim to act immediately.
  • Tells the victim to stay on the victim.
  • Makes calls after business hours.
  • Asks the victim to pay money via gift card or to wire money.
  • Asks the victim to provide personal information.
