TCSS superintendent Keri Johnson said that while no specific threats have been identified in Alabama or directed at TCSS, school officials are taking the situation seriously and have opted to operate under a Heightened Awareness mode.

In an update to parents just before noon on Thursday, Johnson said school leaders learned that the alert was specifically about an online group with a history of making hoax “swatting” calls nationwide, and concerns that they may conduct these calls to schools today.
TCSS explained that "swatting" occurs when someone makes a prank call to emergency services to bring a large number of law enforcement officers to a particular location.

"Whenever we receive information about a potential safety concern that could impact our schools, even if we have limited details, we take that concern seriously," Johnson said. "The safety and security of our students, faculty, and staff is our highest priority."
She then said law enforcement presence may be increased around school campuses as a precautionary measure.
Heightened Awareness is part of the TCSS Safety Plan and is implemented when there is a potential for unusual circumstances.
TCSS leaders say this differs from a lockout or lockdown, instead focusing on increased vigilance rather than restricting movement. Under this protocol, school staff will closely monitor hallways, and entrance points and secure doors during arrivals and dismissals.
“We want to ensure that our schools remain safe environments for students and staff,” Johnson said in a statement to parents. “Heightened Awareness allows us to take extra precautions without causing alarm.”
Parents and guardians are encouraged to communicate any safety concerns to law enforcement or school administrators immediately.
TCSS also offers a confidential Speak Up for Safety line for those who wish to report concerns anonymously. The email address is speakup@tcss.net, and the number to call or text is (659) 734-2808.
