Tuscaloosa 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb Open To Public For First Time

UA says this year marks the first time the event will be open to public participation.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Alabama Athletics and the University of Alabama Police Department on Tuesday announced they are teaming up to host the Tuscaloosa 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Coleman Coliseum on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

The Memorial Stair Climb will once honor the firefighters, police officers, port authority police, and emergency medical services who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

The climb involves ascending and descending 2,200 steps to symbolize the 110 floors of the World Trade Center.

The day's events will start with a pre-climb ceremony at 7:45 a.m., followed by a closed climb reserved for first responders at 8:15 a.m. The public climb will follow at 11:30 a.m.

UAPD first organized the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb in 2018, with this year's event open to the public as a way to broaden participation and foster community involvement.
