Tuscaloosa Police: University Mall Bomb Threat Deemed A Hoax

The Tuscaloosa Police Department says an email bomb threat made against University Mall is a hoax and there is no danger to the public.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — The Tuscaloosa Police Department says an email bomb threat made against University Mall is a hoax and there is no danger to the public.

TPD spokeswoman Stephanie Taylor said officers responded to the mall at 10:30 a.m. Friday after mall staff received an email threat.

"The mall remained open while officers conducted a security check of the premises. An all-clear was declared shortly after 11 p.m.," she said. "Although there was no indication the threat was valid, nearly two dozen officers responded with assistance from the University of Alabama Police Department."

Taylor went on to say that officers and K9s checked all interior and exterior spots on the property before deeming it safe.

"Investigators believe the hoax threat was possibly made by the same person or persons who have made similar threats to government buildings, residences, businesses and places of worship across the country and state in recent days," she said. "TPD investigators have been in contact with federal authorities who are investigating false threats."
