University Of Alabama Reports Record-Breaking Enrollment For Fall 2024

UA on Friday announced it has reached a new milestone for student enrollment by surpassing 40,000 students for the first time.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — The University of Alabama (UA) on Friday announced it has reached a new milestone for student enrollment by surpassing 40,000 students for the first time in school history.

The university’s total enrollment for the fall 2024 semester stands at 40,846, with the growth attributed to a record number of in-state first-year students.

UA reported 3,434 freshmen from Alabama — the largest class of its kind in the university's history, which represents a 7.9% increase in in-state first-year students.

UA President Stuart R. Bell said this continues a trend of growth that has now persisted for six consecutive years.

“We are thrilled to see so many students choosing The University of Alabama for their higher education," Bell said. “This achievement reflects the strength of our faculty, expanding research opportunities, and the comprehensive resources we offer. Our commitment to student success and the Alabama experience continues to attract students from across the state and beyond.”

UA’s enrollment includes students from all 67 Alabama counties, all 50 states, the District of Columbia and 95 different countries.

Alabama officials also said economic data highlights the value of a UA degree, showing that graduates enjoy higher-than-average starting salaries.

The university was also credited with contributing $2.948 billion to the state’s economy.

Other noteworthy enrollment statistics include:

  • A 5.4% increase in graduate school enrollment, with a total of 6,001 students, and an 8.3% rise in in-state graduate students.
  • The university’s minority student population also reached a record 10,111, marking an 8.2% increase from the previous year.
  • The university has also achieved a record 89.5% retention rate for second-year students from the fall 2023 class.
