The group will continue operating at the current location on Rice Mine Road Loop.

“The College of Community Health Sciences and UMC are thrilled to have this outstanding and well-respected group join our practice,” UA’s College of Community Health Sciences (CCHS) Dean Dr. Richard Friend said. “The addition of Alabama Neurology and Sleep Medicine will provide much-needed care and access for our faculty, staff, students and the community. It will also provide additional clinical experiences for the College’s medical students, resident physicians and fellows. We are also excited about an increase in the number of clinical trials that this group brings.”

UMC has provided neurology services at its Tuscaloosa and Northport locations for years and Dr. Friend said the addition of Alabama Neurology and Sleep Medicine will significantly expand that care. It is also the largest multi-specialty medical practice in West Alabama, with clinics on the UA campus and in Northport, Demopolis, Fayette, Carrollton and Livingston.

The practice will include six neurologists and sleep medicine professionals with fellowship training in neuromuscular disease, sleep medicine, epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology.

In addition to the enhanced neurology and sleep services, UMC–Neurology and Sleep Medicine will offer electro-diagnostics and EEG testing to evaluate muscle and nerve function, measure electrical activity in the brain and assess nerve damage.

“We are excited to bring our specialty and subspecialty neurology and sleep medicine programs into University Medical Center,” said Dr. James Geyer, a neurologist with the group and director of its Sleep Program. “Our physicians, advanced providers, technologists and nursing staff bring a wealth of experience to patient care, medical education and clinical research.”

Alabama Neurology and Sleep Medicine says it recorded more than 25,000 patient encounters in 2024 and conducted more than 3,000 sleep studies. The practice operates a large accredited sleep center and houses one of the nation’s few accredited Behavioral Sleep Medicine training programs.
