Captain Phil Simpson, commander of the task force, said the detail and arrests are not related to the longer human trafficking investigation that began in February.

β€œOur task force operates on the principle that buyers of commercial sex allow the trafficker to run a profitable operation,” Simpson. β€œSimply put, without the demand, there would be no need for the supply. Our ultimate goal is to stop people from being exploited and victimized by traffickers.”

Simpson went on to say that the human trafficking investigation began Feb. 7 when investigators with the Alabama Bureau of Investigation made contact with a woman at a Tuscaloosa hotel.

It was believed that the woman was possibly a victim of human trafficking and the West Alabama Human Trafficking Task Force was contacted.

Investigators responded to the hotel and gathered enough information to charge Cedric Marquis Spencer, 31, of Tuscaloosa with first-degree human trafficking that day.

What's more, volunteers with Trafficking Hope assisted the victim in obtaining medical care and other immediate needs.

Simpson said part of the follow-up investigation resulted in task force members arresting the following suspects for solicitation of prostitution in recent weeks:
