VCU Captain Marty Sellers told local media Thursday morning that when officers arrived on the scene, they found a man who had been shot multiple times.
Sellers said the man — later identified as 28-year-old Jermaine Dashun Witherspoon of Tuscaloosa — was transported to an area hospital and died from his injuries.

He then said Witherspoon and the suspect, 47-year-old Tuscaloosa County resident Joyce Reed, were acquaintances who had been involved in a disagreement prior to the shooting.
"After speaking with witnesses and reviewing evidence, it was determined that as she stood outside her car, Ms. Reed shot Mr. Witherspoon as he sat inside her vehicle," Sellers said. "There was no evidence that Mr. Witherspoon was armed prior to being shot. ... The exact nature of their relationship is still being determined by investigators."
Sellers said Reed was charged with capital murder and is being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail without bond.
