Here are the top three stories today in Anchorage:
- 300 loads of snow have been removed so far from the slide public officials are calling a “once-in-a-century” Alaskan avalanche. Over 20 trucks are attempting to clear the snow and will continue as planned, the Municipality of Anchorage said on Tuesday. If there had been no intervention the area would likely have been cut off until summer. Still, it will take several weeks to remove the snow, officials say. Steer clear of Hiland Road area in Eagle River to avoid a possible secondary avalanche. (The Independent)
- A state agency is investigating two Anchorage arcades after allegations of illegal gambling. Alaska's News Source investigated after testimonies from several patrons. “A referral was made to the appropriate law enforcement agency for the criminal allegations,” said Michele Hearn, an investigator with the Division of Corporations, Business, and Professional Licensing. Apparently, the West Side Arcade at 3600 Minnesota Drive in Anchorage was operating without a business license on Feb. 25 when Alaska’s News Source was undercover. (Alaska's News Source)
- The Pentagon has launched a Suicide Prevention and Response Independent Review Committee to study military suicides in Alaska and other US installations. A total of 11 Army Alaska soldiers committed suicide in 2021, five involving soldiers from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage.“It’s imperative, the secretary believes, that we continue to take care of all our teammates and reinforce that mental health and suicide prevention remain a key priority,” said Pentagon Spokesman John Kirby at a Mar. 22 news conference. “I think you’ve heard the secretary say many times, mental health is health, period.” (Alaska's News Source)
