📰 News we're reading

• JBER bans service members from going to Anchorage bar (alaskasnewssource.com) — Military leaders at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson have temporarily banned more than 5,500 service members from visiting the Gaslight Bar in downtown Anchorage after a series of violent incidents, including two fatal shootings. The move has split opinion among bar owners, veterans, and military families, while an Armed Forces Disciplinary Control Board review will determine whether the restriction becomes permanent.

• Congressional delegation remains silent on supporting D.C. deployment of Alaska National Guard troops (alaskasnewssource.com) — Anchorage readers are watching closely as Alaska’s congressional delegation and Gov. Mike Dunleavy stay silent on whether they support sending 100 Alaska National Guard members to Washington, D.C. for security duties. The deployment, requested by the governor, has raised legal and civil liberties concerns, including from Anchorage Rep. Andrew Gray, an Alaska Guard veteran worried about potential use against peaceful protests.

• How Long Is the Train Ride From Anchorage to Fairbanks, Alasla? (thetundradrums.com) — If you’re planning a trip from Anchorage to Fairbanks, expect the Alaska Railroad ride to take about 12 hours, with scenic stops in places like Wasilla, Talkeetna, and Denali National Park. While flying cuts the journey to about an hour and driving takes 7–8 hours, many travelers still choose the slower train for its comfort and sweeping wilderness views.
