📰 News we're reading

1. Anchorage officials say online survey for new municipal seal was manipulated (alaskapublic.org) — Anchorage leaders say an online public survey about changing the city’s official seal was likely manipulated, with thousands of near-identical responses opposing any change. After adjusting for suspicious entries, a slim majority favored a new design, but most votes still backed the current seal. The Anchorage Assembly plans to choose one of five options at its meeting Tuesday night.

2. Anchorage homeless shelter providers rush to add more beds during cold snap (adn.com) — Anchorage officials and shelter providers are scrambling to add beds and use the Anchorage Safety Center as a de facto warming space as subzero temperatures strain already full homeless shelters. The Assembly just expanded capacity at the East 56th Avenue mass shelter, but outreach workers say hundreds still sleep outside and rotate through limited warm spaces overnight.

3. FBI Anchorage sees increase in fraud schemes (webcenterfairbanks.com) — Anchorage residents are being warned that the local FBI field office is seeing more scam calls from people posing as law enforcement or government officials, demanding immediate payments. Agents stress that real officers will never call to threaten arrest or demand cash, crypto, or gift cards. Locals are urged to hang up, protect their accounts, and report suspected fraud promptly.

4. Alaska LNG receives final federal permit ahead of schedule (blackchronicle.com) — State-level approvals in Anchorage are now the final hurdle before construction can start on the massive Alaska LNG project, which just cleared all federal permitting ahead of schedule. The multibillion-dollar pipeline and export plan could reshape Alaska’s economy, with backers targeting a late-2026 construction start and mid-2029 operations if investors give the green light.
