The number of Black/African American-owned employer firms and businesses are rising steadily. According to Census data, in:
- 2014, there were approximately 108,473
- 2014, there were 31,216 black-owned health care and social assistance firms; 15,078 professional, scientific, and technical support businesses; and 9,644 administrative, support, waste management and remediation services
- 2016, there were approximately 121,466
- 2017, there were approximately 124,004
- 2020, there were approximately 134,567
- 2020, there were 39,705 health care and social assistance firms, accounting for about 29.5% of all African American owned businesses.
