Here are the top three stories in Anchorage today:

  1. The Anchorage School Board has selected a Texas school district executive as the district's new superintendent. Jharrett Bryantt, 32, currently leads the office of talent at the Houston Independent School District and will take over for current superintendent Deena Bishop on Jul. 1. “I’m humbled, excited, and I’m ready to lead this district toward a bright new chapter,” Bryantt said Thursday. “I can’t wait to get to Anchorage and get to personally know our families, our students, our staff, and our community members and community leaders.” (Subscription: Anchorage Daily News; Free: Alaska Public Media News)
  2. As Anchorage's housing market continues to tighten, some families aren't seeing a clear road out of homelessness. According to the Anchorage Coalition to End Homelessness, the city’s shelter system serves more than 140 families. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, churches paused their homelessness program to protect volunteers. As federal emergency COVID dollars came in, the city moved families to their own hotel rooms. Terria Ware, with the Anchorage Coalition to End Homelessness, said big families are having to wait up to a year for a home. The problem isn’t funding, said Ware, it’s available housing. (KTOO)
  3. Reminder: Monday, Apr. 18 is the last day to participate in a University of Alaska Anchorage faculty-led survey on natural hazards. Municipal Alaskan residents are invited to share in the survey their experiences with wildfire, permafrost thaw, and ice hazards in the state of Alaska.
