📰 News we're reading

1. The Giant Code Versus The Single Nail: Why Simple Fixes Are Ignored (scienceblog.com) — Anchorage homeowners and builders are learning that just three simple, inexpensive construction details—shear walls, proper framing around garages, and hold-downs—can determine whether a house survives the next big quake. Researchers interviewed nearly 40 Anchorage experts after the 2018 earthquake and argue that simplifying local code enforcement around these critical features could dramatically improve neighborhood safety without driving up costs.

2. Boys and Girls Club to abruptly close 2 Anchorage child care programs (alaskapublic.org) — Two Boys and Girls Clubs child care programs in Anchorage — at Turnagain Elementary and the Woodland Park child development center — will shut down Dec. 24, with staff laid off shortly after. The closures deepen Anchorage’s ongoing child care crunch, as families already face high costs, long waitlists, and fewer providers while the organization struggles with delayed reimbursements and rising expenses.

3. Official ribbon cutting for Anchorage tiny village to house people experiencing homelessness (alaskasnewssource.com) — Anchorage has officially opened a new tiny home village near Tudor and Elmore to house residents experiencing homelessness and addiction for 6 to 12 months. Funded primarily by opioid settlement money, the 32-unit Micro Units for Recovery project includes shared facilities and on-site services, with a behavioral health provider contract nearly finalized and first residents expected to move in January.

4. Mountain View building comes down to make way for new housing for youth (alaskasnewssource.com) — In Anchorage’s Mountain View neighborhood, a long-deteriorated Peterkin Avenue building has been demolished to clear space for new transitional housing for at-risk youth. Nonprofit and city partners envision modular “Happy Healing Homes” plus a campus center offering job training, education, and health services, though the project is still in fundraising and bound to a city timeline.

5. Rasmuson Foundation announces artist awards, sabbatical recipients (adn.com) — Anchorage artists are front and center this year, with 21 locals receiving $10,000 Rasmuson Foundation Individual Artist Awards across music, visual, literary, and traditional arts. They’re joined by creatives and nonprofit leaders from around Alaska, including eight sabbatical recipients, in a major restart of the foundation’s grantmaking.
