Here are the top stories today in Anchorage:
- On Monday, police revealed a woman allegedly had killed a 3-year-old family member before taking her own life in an Anchorage home. According to a statement by police, officers were called to the 6100 block of Winding Way in Northeast Anchorage at 6:35 p.m. on Friday after a woman and boy were found dead inside the home. The statement names the woman as 29-year-old Jeannie Lowther; the child has not been identified. (Anchorage Daily News)
- A 22-year-old man was jailed on Monday in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in Midtown over the weekend. According to charging documents, Brent Avery Smith is accused of killing 30-year-old Julian Francis Jr. next to the indoor swimming pool at the Hyatt House hotel in Anchorage on Saturday. Smith is being held at the Anchorage Correctional Complex on $750,000 bail while facing charges of first- and second-degree murder. (Anchorage Daily News)
- The Anchorage Symphony Orchestra has named Elizabeth Schulze as its new Music Director. Schulze has been acting Artistic Advisor and Chief Conductor and is praised by critics as "an ideal music director whose infectious energy is as contagious as her exuberant and thoroughly committed musicianship." Initially joining the ASO as Artistic Advisor in Jan. 2021, Schulze is also the Music Director and Conductor of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra. (Anchorage Press)
