Aldi In Arizona: Chain Breaks Ground On Store In Buckeye

The store will be Aldi's first location in Arizona. They already have more than 1,7000 stores in 35 states.

BUCKEYE, AZ – The international, low-cost supermarket chain with few frills, is getting ready to open to its first store in Arizona. The chain broke ground recently in Buckeye by Yuma and Watson Roads.

Aldi, which has more than 1,700 stores in 35 states, says that the company is focused on keeping operating costs low and passing the savings on to customers.

The stores are smaller than most chains, have far fewer selections, and customers bring their own bags.

The store in Buckeye is expected to open later this year or early next year. (Get Phoenix Patch's daily newsletter and real-time news alerts. Or, find your local Patch here and subscribe).

Also, unlike most supermarkets where customers grab carts and often leave them in parking lots, requiring employees to gather them and bring them back, Aldi stores rent their carts. Customers pay 25 cents into a machine, grab a cart, and then – if they want their quarter back – bring the cart back.
