PHOENIX, AZ — Bands of heavy rain and lightning are rolling through the Valley on Friday, breaking records for rainfall and daily temperatures, the National Weather Service said.

The storms have produced around .44 inches of rain at the service's weather station at Sky Harbor, which is a record for the date, and are moving from north to south.

Flash flooding has been reported in the north Valley, in places like New River, where there's an abundance of running water across various roadways.

Additionally, the high temperature at the airport (74 degrees), is the lowest recorded at the station in more than nine years.

The rain is wrecking havoc on the Valley's freeways, with northbound Interstate 17 closing Friday morning near the Interstate 10 split, after a semi tractor-trailer was lifted off the roadway by heavy winds.

A flash flood watch is in effect for Phoenix through 11 p.m. Saturday, with upwards of an inch of rain possible in the city limits, the service's forecast predicts.

There's 70 percent chance of rain on Saturday, before dropping down to 60 percent on Sunday and 50 percent on Monday, the service said.

A flood warning was issued by the service Friday morning for Scottsdale and the north valley, effective through 3:45 p.m.

The warning says that flooding of urban areas and local roads, freeways and underpasses is likely.

There's a large storm that's currently heading in the direction of Scottsdale, between the city and Fountain Hills, that could drop heavy rain and further increase flooding in the area, the service tweeted on Friday morning.
