📰 News we're reading

1. Phoenix 911 system adding behavioral health response (fox10phoenix.com) — Starting Monday, Phoenix 911 operators will begin routing some calls to 24/7 behavioral health teams instead of automatically sending police or fire, as part of a major city-funded overhaul. Officials say behavioral health-related calls have surged, and this new system aims to get Phoenix residents faster, more appropriate help while freeing up emergency crews for true police and fire crises.

2. Teenager missing from north Phoenix for three weeks (abc15.com) — A Phoenix family is pleading for help to find 16-year-old Eli Rabadi, who has been missing since November 22 and was last seen near 3rd and Northern avenues in north Phoenix. He attends Sunnyslope High School, and Phoenix police are investigating while stressing there’s no specific indication of immediate danger, even as friends and family report no contact.

3. Man sentenced more than six years for role in drug conspiracy (kvoa.com) — Federal authorities say a man has been sentenced to more than six years in prison after being caught with about 100 pounds of methamphetamine in Phoenix last summer, allegedly bound for delivery that night. The case, tied to a Homeland Security Task Force targeting cartels, underscores ongoing efforts to disrupt large-scale drug trafficking through the Phoenix area.

4. Phoenix Zoo partners with wildlife group to house illegally imported animals (azfamily.com) — The Phoenix Zoo is stepping up to house animals confiscated from illegal imports or kept without proper permits, working with the Wildlife Confiscation Network. A growing number of primates, turtles, corals, and other species are being placed at facilities like the Phoenix Zoo as advocates push to curb the exotic pet trade and improve animal welfare.

5. Arizona's Family Surprise Squad spreads holiday cheer at Phoenix Fry's Food Store (azfamily.com) — Shoppers at the Fry’s Food Store at 24th Street and Baseline in Phoenix got a big surprise when Arizona’s Family Surprise Squad handed out hundreds of dollars in gift cards just two weeks before Christmas. Meteorologist Paul Horton roamed the aisles gifting cards to a birthday girl, a hardworking caregiver, and other stunned customers, adding some unexpected holiday relief for local families.
