Here are the top three stories today in Phoenix:

  1. On Saturday, Apr. 15, Arizona Birth Workers of Color will be hosting a birth clinic at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Phoenix. The clinic is designed to help Black families develop birth plans that offer support before, during, and after childbirth. According to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), maternal mortality rates have been surging since 2021 and Black Americans continue to face the highest rate by large margins. (The Arizona Republic)
  2. Representative Liz Harris (R-District 13) has officially been expelled from the Arizona State House for violating ethics rules. Last week, the House voted 46-13 in favor of expelling Harris from the committee. The House Ethics Committee confirmed Harris broke ethics rules when she invited conspiracy theorists to a February joint committee hearing who made outlandish claims during the meeting. (Arizona Family)
  3. In Tuesday's lottery drawing, a Mega Millions ticket that was sold at a Phoenix grocery store won the $1 million prize. According to the Arizona Lottery, the winning ticket with Megaplier 3X was purchased at a Safeway near 48th Street and Elliot Road in Phoenix. The ticketholder missed out on winning the Mega ball number but got all five of the other corresponding numbers that earned the prize. (KTAR)

  • According to the National Weather Service, Phoenix and surrounding areas are expected to see record-breaking heat in the next few days. Earlier this week, temperatures went as high as 99 degrees, therefore breaking the old record of 98 degrees set around this time of year in 1989. A low-pressure system is now heading toward Phoenix that will bring temperatures down into the 80s by Thursday, but temperatures are expected to rise again into the lower to mid-90s by Sunday with plenty of sunshine to go around.
